Hi, I'm an indian student and registered two not-for-profit domain names for my university via a paypal account through godaddy.com. When I bought it, godaddy decided to auto-renew and I didn't notice it. Now it had my paypal account on file, and I decided to remove it, so if someone else accesses my account, they can't exploit it. Initially godaddy didn't allow me to cancel the payment option and remove it because the domain names were still "attached" to it. [edit]The domains were valid for seven more months, and I just didn't want godaddy to have my paypal username and password. When I forcibly removed the payment option, all three of my domain names have gone into parking. And when I contacted support, apparently the domains are in "redemption" mode, and I can re-enable them by paying $100 each. By our local currency, $300 is a tremondous amount of money, and I don't have that kind of funds, and nor does the institute. I have all the billing agreements, and all the required details, and still there's no use. I really need to re-enable the domains for the university's benefit or there will be a lot of problems. If someone can tell me if there's anything I can do, it would be of great help. Thanks in advance paradoxist1
When did the domains expire? Typically they enter 'redemption' about 30-45 days after expiry if the owner has not paid renewal. All registrars charge a redemption fee of at least $100 if the domain enters this status. Your best bet may be persistent pleading and requests to waive the fee. Can you get the university to contact them or they don't know yet?
Sorry. I am having a hard time with this story. When you do not have auto renew enabled Godaddy worries you to death with renewal notices starting at 90 days before and the frequency increases at the time draws near. Unless you failed to maintain a current and correct email address there is no way you could have not know these were expiring. If you failed to keep your address current you can only blame yourself. I think you have already gotten the best advice possible from tobycoke above. Good luck.
Thanks for the suggestion The worst part is that the domains were not expiring for another few months. I just deleted my payment method from file, and that's all I did.
Whoa If that is the case there has been some kind of error. They should not go to redemption just becase you cancel a payment method. Suggest you contact GD support and explain the situation.
