As a web designer I've been working with websites using different hosting services. As other peoples said, GoDaddy has serious problems when running some scripts (I wasn't been able to properly configure a Pligg installation). HostGator is a lot better that GoDaddy, but there are still some better options than both of them. I've recently hosted a website at HostGator and it has been running extremely slow. I've posted the problem on a support ticked, they fixed it quickly, but after a few hours or a half of a day the problem appeared again and again and again until I've moved my site to another host. You can find some recommendations on my site. I am affiliate for some of them, but these are only services that I've been used on real projects.
I like hostgator bec they allow not just mainstream sites but also adult sites I like their company phase "we eat up the competitors" and their live chat support is super user friendly when it comes to support and help
I'm using the HostNine services from about 7 months and everything went fine so far. It doesn't run extremely fast but still very good and it is very reliable and it has a very good support service. In the same hosting account I have a demo pligg installation. Please take a look if you want to see how a complex script is running on the most cheapest shared hosting plan of HostNine. The demo pligg site is http://pligg.zeegal.com/. Important: There may be (or not) many hosting services better that the ones I recommend. I only can tell you about the services that I've been working with, so you can make your better choice. Again, GoDaddy is a bad choice for hosting, but a resonable one for domain registration.
I've been using Godaddy for smaller sites and domains for years and can honestly say I haven't had one single problem and their support has been great. I had to make the switch to a dedicated sever and went with Hostgator and it was a nightmare. The Hostgator server itself wasn't a problem... I had to call five times in one day, on hold 30 minutes each time, spoke to five different people in one day just to have one question answered. But that's just my experience... could have been an off mont for them, who knows.
I use hostgator, so far so good Anyone hating on the two is just a bit arrogant, they are both great providers
Neither, they are both garbage from my experience. I use Dreamhost for my hosting with a separate domain registrar.
