Godaddy Auto Renewal Scam

I received an email a couple of hours ago from Godaddy telling me that a 5-paged hosting account priced at $4.99/month had just been auto-renewed and my credit card has been billed. I purchased a domain name on January 1st, 2011 with a $1.67 domain name coupon, and apparently the hosting account came with the dollar domain name. After ordering, I log into my account to disable auto renew for my new domain.

Did a search on Google and discovered that this "scam" has been going on since a couple of years back and lots of people have complained about the same issue. Godaddy does not send any renewal notices in advance and only sends you an email letting you know that your credit card has already been billed and you can do nothing about it, after they earn their money. Also, I read in a few complaints that Godaddy automatically turns on auto renewal even after you turn it off when you renew a domain name.

I hate Godaddy now. I've always been careful with my online bills and now they've dropped a bomb on me. I'll never use them again and I'll be transferring my domains to Namecheap as soon as I get the chance.

For every Godaddy user out there, do take care to turn auto renew off for those unused "free" products, or just get out of there as soon as you can, so you don't end up like me.

Just call and ask to cancel. They have always honored my requests to cancel when something renewed inadvertently.

Although, admittedly, their site appears designed to cause the problem. :(
