My company has hired somebody in to do SEO. They are trying to set realistic goals to be met at the end of this guys year here at the company. Now here's my question. Should we give monthly goals to be met for specific keywords? I mean, asking things like

We want x amount of backlinks for keyword x monthly
We want you to pump out 5 articles a day etc..

I mean, I thought this would be good cause we would KNOW for sure we're getting the backlinks we want. Any thoughts?

That's what I thought.. I'm the only person here who thinks setting monthly goals with some sort of reporting would be good. The rest of the people here think just telling the guy

"We want to be #1 on google for keyword1,keyword2,keyword3, and keyword4 after your year here"

I think that setting goals for x number of backlinks would be a waste of time. I can get you thousands of junk backlinks very quickly but they will do you no good at all and may even decrease your rankings.

By giving this goal you make it less likely that your SEO will concentrate on quality links that get you traffic and rankings. Their focus has to be on results.

Keyword Research is the very important part of optimizing. Before you can do on page optimization you need to find the right keyword first. Not all of the keywords that is ranking for your site are useful and will bring lot of targeted traffic. That is why you need to do keyword research by using keywords suggestion tool. Google suggestion tool is the best tool to find related and synonyms of keywords. After getting related keywords, find the traffic of each keywords and the number of search result in search engine then compute for KEI of each keywords. The formula of KEI is [ KEI = (traffic/search result)*traffic ] . It is better to target keywords that has high KEI which is greater than 1. If the KEI is less than 1 it only means that the keywords is very competitive or useless to target.

Wrong goals for SEO, IMO. You should be more focused on search traffic and not rankings for specific keywords.
