Hey, I have a small site i'm starting up and its just for local town hobbies. I signed up with godaddy and was wondering if it will be able to handle phpbb traffic? tx
Why are you asking this hear? Ask your provider, Godaddy. Either way, I do not know of a single shared hosting provider with cPanel that does NOT support phpbb. If you've got php and mySQL you're pretty well set. I doubt you'll have any issues.
I have phpbb installed but was wondering more about performance and if and when i should go to a dedicated server?
If you're just starting out you'd be fine for some time. When you see growth, you can move to a better shared host - possibly one with hard limits because they are less likely to limit your concurrent connections less than what godaddy would (I think it's 25? I could be wrong) Then you can go to a VPS if you need more control/performance and then to a dedicated. If you jump straight to a dedicated now, you'll only waste money - you're better off saving for the long run.
I think they will be able to handle that as any other web hosting providers. That does not requrie something specific.
I think if you really want to scale up you're probably gonna want to move to something a bit more powerful on the BB front as well, like VB before moving to the dedicated server.
You can't compare the two - vBulletin is great because they have funding from the license fees. And phpBB is a great free software but the amount of security, modifications, themes, etc. aren't nearly as abundant as vBulletin or any other paid softwares.
Whatchu talkin bout' Willis? Yeah.. I'm gonna have to disagree with you on that, having used both and moderating and owning forums using both. VB is beyond worth the money. Much more secure, and does not require a whole host of mods to do some of the most basic of functions. From a management standpoint, as well as scaling, VB is gonna be a lot better than any Freebie concoction out there.
What version of VB would you recommend? I seen some ppl selling their licenses on here, would that be a way to go? tx for all the info
I don't know their policy on buying/selling licenses - you should check the official vb forum for that. And vB 4.0 is out currently and it's looking pretty good. If you have an active license with updates, you can download the latest vB version from your member's panel easily.
