Interested in making a Gmail account. I am from the UK and want a @gmail not a @googlemail (if your from the UK you have the @googlemail.)

Just wondering if I go through a proxy to get a @gmail will google pick up on this and change my account to @googlemail?

    Thanks..

Googlemail is Gmail - when you get a Googlemail account you can use the extension "Gmail".

ask your sender to send email at @gmail.com address and it'll be delivered right to you.

That's quite interesting... I didn't pay attention until now, but yes, all people from UK have "googlemail" instead of "gmail". I don't think the proxy idea is good, as they will see through it.

There is no difference, Google would redirect the email, it's the same.

I am in the UK and have held a Googlemail account for some years now, although I tend to give out the Googlemail address by false of habit the Gmail address works as well, I think Google orginally had some issue using the business name Gmail in the UK for a while and had to use Googlemail, I understand this has now been resolved but as nobody really notices I guess they have felt it is fine to keep going, I don't blame them!!

they changed it to googlemail.com for some countries because of trademark issues

"The domain gmail.com is unavailable in certain countries, such as the United Kingdom and Germany, due to trademark disputes, in which cases users must use the domain googlemail.com.[33]

Because the domains are interchangeable, users obliged to use the googlemail.com domain are unable to select addresses already chosen by gmail.com users. Inbound e-mails sent to either googlemail.com or gmail.com addresses will reach the user. When registering for an online service, Googlemail users must use the googlemail.com form of their email address to ensure that any administrative emails they send to the service, such as confirmation messages, are recognized."
