yeah and you can't make new account on gmail with out giving your Personal Phone number or Friends phone number, it seems google going to Protect gmail from spammers . and its very good thing by the way

 

Maybe aside from Google making sure a human was registering, Google also gather some information too, like your country based on your mobile phone number... Even though, surely Google will not use those info in any unreasonable way.
