I've just signed a new gmail account yesterday, and there's no such thing as "sending an activation code via SMS to your mobile phone".

Well, I think its just to prevent SPAM registrations.
If you enter the wrong captcha code, you need to verify the legitimacy of the account through SMS.

Google's Freeeee (Except for Google Earth Pro) Though, don't you think the flight option in Google Earth Pro is sort of a hit at MS Flight Simulator?

Gmail will always be free ..
Not only they did their captchas very complex they also now require SMS validation sometimes which is good to prevent spam . :)

In a sense GMail is still free, the SMS verification for new sign ups may not have been implemented in some countries but it will be. If you don't have a mobile phone, Google advise you to borrow one from someone who has. :)

Their captchas are really hard. Its hard for me to pass the registration process one time. Or maybe I should have an eye transplant.

I don't know how a bot could have broken the sign-up process lol. I can barely read the captcha code with human eyes when I sign up for gmail accounts.

It's still free, it's just a feature or a system to reduce spam. The SMS will probably be fully paid by Google.

you are right that google need sms verification code.
but when ever i made any google account there is no option of sms verification account.
on the other hand when ever my friends made any google account, there is the option of google account.
i am so confused why this is happening here.
i have reinstall my operating system but still there is no option of sms verification.
