    Gmail is out of beta but it's still free. I don't think it will cost you to receive activation code via SMS. Otherwise, go with other options.

    It's not scam. GMail is indeed verifying fake signups with mobile SMS codes. But I don't know the exceptions.

    many people uses gmail to send spams to long email lists because gmail is the only free service which allows to send an email to a multi-list . now they are trying to prevent this
