Even with an invitation sent to you. I still need to phone verify to activate your gmail account.

Google is free! Google makes its money through PPC and other ad programs which is why they give much of their web based programs away for free, and I doubt you will ever see Google start to charge anything. Infact I read an article today from CNN that claimed Google may be offering a web based OS for everybody by 2010 through its Chrome program. Pretty cool more free stuff and better yet its keeps our computers running as fast as the day we buy them..

Has OP created lot many gmail accounts...lately?
If that is the case, perhaps gmail has blacklisted his IP and to prevent fraudulent creation of lot many gmail ids, google has probably re-introduced this feature!

Because it's keywords that draw in search engine visitors who hopefully click on the ad sharing adverts at the top of the page?

They're just protecting against spammers. I think all free service will put these measures into place eventually.

GMail is free but it require invitation for gmail account, u can try again and if still asking for sms then u can verify, or request someone here to get one for u, as many are saying they signup and its free.

I just signed up for a new gmail account (new business, few people involved), and i only needed to use the security image, it didn't tell me anything about verifying it by SMS. Maybe it's certain countries? (I'm live in the UK).
