Gmail is free as giving something free is what makes Google more popular and dominating web entity. At least Google is making some steps to make gmail free from spammer.

I heard that google lab products are out of beta. I think this is one of their moves to provide quality services and keep off spammers from stepping into their products.

Even if I invite someone through the "Invitations" available in my account, will he still have to verify through sms?

Gmail is free for individual but probably can charge for companies in near future as I read in some news.

Can't be that expensive? Them sending you an SMS costs you around - nothing.

I think if Gmail team initiated this thing! then its good sign to prevent from bloody spammers! a genuine user will surely process sms according to particular requirement. I m glad that Yahoo & Windows Live would also start anything alike this to prevent from malicious spammers

Would cost me more than nothing as I don't have a mobile phone.

Not sure what I would do if I saw this. Do they have an opt out or second method of confirming if needbe?

Hmm that's strange... they never asked me to verify anything over SMS when I just registered for Gmail.
