What do you think the real version will be like when its out of beta?
Will you even notice a difference?

Ya i think so, because I don't think it's in beta anymore. You don't even have to get referred anymore :)

Well maybe they don't feel like they have finished it's development yet and that it still has far to go. They wouldn't of forgotten about the BETA logo :p, they will just not be ready to claim that it is finished yet.

However I can't imagine it being in BETA for much longer.

Gmail was and is still in beta - for over 2.5 years counting today.
*Google betas are known for being notoriously long.

No longer, you can just go to gmail.com and sign up online. I remembered when the invites just came, everyone was asking for one. But after sometime there were too many and no one actually bothered.

Are there any real perks to having a Gmail account, i.e., any different than Yahoo, Hotmail, and the likes? Just curious.

Yeah, the space, speed , spam filtering and the way it organises your mail is the best :p
Also; I thought it was the new interface that was in beta, they totally redid the backend for it didnt they?

Use it then you'll know it's far far better than Yahoo, Hotmail and the likes. Just simple comparison - daily I have average of more than 50 spam at Yahoo and 10 at hotmail (I rarely use it anymore) and Gmail - something like 2-5 daily.

I've been using Gmail for two years now and rarely touch my Yahoo - if not because of flickr and myblolog accounts.

Gmail is a public beta, but they are in beta still. Only difference is that you don't need an invite.
