Are the gmail accounts sold, as one of the books says?

Why are gmail accounts still only accessible from invites? I mean everyone can dish out 50 at a time so it doesnt make sense not to allow people to just sign up for them.

It makes it more difficult for spammers to just go and sign up for hundreds of accounts I guess. That's the only reason I can think of, since everyone who doesn't have a Gmail account now either knows someone with spare invites or doesn't want an account anyway.

The nice though is that when Google does a final release of a product it works. Unlike most software that is beta but released to meet a deadline or something...
