So I saw this banner ad for Globat. Has anyone used them? I never heard of them but for 3.5TB of BW! I could care less! My current host is pretty crappy in the uptime department as it is so they could not be worse. heck, I would buy 2 accounts on two different servers and have at it!

Wait, did I read that right? Let me make a screen save.

So I go to their site to look at the deal but . . . guess what? No such deal on the site. Hmmm Maybe you have to ask for the deal. I hit up the instant chat with sales thingy and, well, you can read for yourself . . .

That's right! The add that I was looking at was not actually a valid offer. Hmmmm. Don't think I am quite ready to switch hosts.

I never dealt with Globat--but that ad is placed by an affiliate, so that's not really the same as them advertising it. I'd guess that the affiliate isn't up to date with their offers... or he was just hoping that would get you there and you'd still sign up for whatever's available.

If your main requirement is a ton of disk space & bandwidth, Dreamhost recently jacked their limits way up.

They can keep jacking up the disk space and the bandwidth, but one thing will never change, the CPU and Memory limits. By the time you get to use even 25% of the space offered you'll get a wonderful warning saying you're using way too much CPU!

There are lots of threads about this, its all a marketing gimmik...

I thought it was a bait and switch till I realized it was an affiliate ad.

Why is it so hard to find a decent host?

Globat, iPower, Dotster, Aplus, all of those registrars/hosting services are just a pain to deal with.

I'd say that's true most of the time--but not always, depending on what your site is doing.

Dreamhost lifted their CPU limits and more surprisingly, allows the space to be used as storage--which isn't going to pin the memory or CPU usage.

CPU & memory limits are to be expected in shared hosting though, so as long as they're reasonable, I think it's okay.

What bugs me is when hosts add little catches like "xx% of files must be linked from a regular HTML page" or anything like that, because that's flat out telling you that they don't exect you to even use the disk space they offer, regardless of whether you're within the bandwidth/CPU/memory limits.

I think finding a decent host is easier than finding one that stays decent, since they will all have problems at one point or another--and sometimes it takes a while before you get to see how they handle themselves when things get tough.

Personally, I still prefer the larger established hosts for stability, though (despite some bad luck with Site5).

Anyway, promo codes & spammed affiliate links aside, I think many have been mentioned on DP that are good choices: Hostgator, Steadfast, A Small Orange, etc... I also put Dreamhost on that list, even though many people don't like them. When you have thousands of customers, a small percentage of unhappy ones still seems like a lot.

I think thats where support matters most, unfortunately most hosting companies that try to sell their plans for $2 offer 50GB of disk hire dirt cheap level 1 techies that can't do much. When you truly find a real host that has certified techs you'll understand the difference. Quick response times and knowledgable answers are key in this business especially where there is so much competition. You shouldn't be working to find a host, your host should be working for you!:D

I've had no problems with Hostgator since I've been with them for the last year or so. I have several sites hosted with them too.

I am with Jaguarpc. when i had their basic shared plan it was pretty good but when I switched to their reseller server it went horrible. for a while, the server was going down every day with mysterious "dns" issues. Then it started hard failing. I have been with a handful of companies and really would rather not have to migrate again.

I sent Globat a link to this thread when I was chatting with the sales associate online thinking that they would pull the affiliate ad but I saw it again today.
That's a really big red flag for me.

Globat is not so good. First of all even if u take the hosting from globat.com then they will be having 100s of servers clustered ion the same ip. This is shoot down your site performance.

Then after that they wont be giving you full resources... like after some thousandsd of request to the server from your site will results in banning up your site for few hours by Globat.com

They are doing nothing but its just a mkting stunt.

Their security on the servers are too week...

I will recommend a big NO to globat.com

Even though it's BS advertising, it might still be bringing in a bunch of cash.

In their defense, it could be queued up for some sort of review process and maybe affiliate stuff is low on the priority list--but who knows.

It could also be that they canned the affiliate, so even if the banner is still up, the affiliate might not be getting his cut anymore.

    Let's talk about it.

On your favorite shared web hosting, say we put up a website like youtube.
Upload a single, one and only, 20mb video.
    Let's disregard uploads.

QUESTION (without abusing or "using too much much cpu")
    1) what web hosting?
    2) how many people can view the video at the same time?
    3) how many people can view the video each month?

i know that dedicated hosting is more suitable, but
is there any shared web hosting where we can put that kind of website without running into any "too much cpu", "abuse", or other similar problems.
