Global_.fp5 corruption

Discussion in 'Optigold ISP' started by pdarling, Aug 17, 2005.

Filemaker has informed me that Global_.fp5 is damaged and cannot be opened. I performed the suggested recovery action and renamed the recovered file to Global_.fp5, placed it and restarted the db server. It still says that the file is damaged. No information in the eventviewer application log. Any ideas?

Did you delete the original Global_.fp5 file? Or at least rename it?

The only other option would be to restore the Global_.fp5 file from a backup in that case.

Egad. My backup copy has a similar filesize as the current, but a couple K off. Will restoration of that file from backups create inconsistencies or broken links between other databases?

No, it should be fine... the only thing in that file is system preferences (the stuff under General Preferences for example).

Even reverting to the backup reports that Global_.fp5 is damaged. I am positive that it was not damaged at the time of backup. What am I missing here?

If the file is not damaged (and you are certain of that), then the only other thing I can think of is it's not opening the right copy. There definitely is a damaged one SOMEWHERE that it's seeing though.

Filemaker has never reported a damaged database until today. Other than backup directories I made, there are no other copies of the fp5 databases. How do the optigold database files get associated with filemaker server? If there is a list or registry entry somewhere I could verify the source directory? I'm scurrd Shawn.

Has anyone else ran into this persistent damage? Are there associated databases that could be inheriting damage to Global_.fp5? I need a next step toward fixing this.

FileMaker Server opens whatever files are within the FileMaker Server folder. But if the file is damaged, it would never be opened by FileMaker Server to begin with. Have you checked the application event log to see if FileMaker Server logged any errors when it started up?

Listen to this voodoo. After taking no additional steps since my last post, optigold now opens Global_.fp5 without complaining. Unfortunately, I am now stuck with this error:

"Invoices_ could not be found and is required to complete this operation"

Note the lack of file extension, not sure if that matters.

The Invoices_.fp5 (no spaces) file is in the same place as all the others on the filemaker server, but does not show up with the other fp5 files in Hosts. <-^-> (host squiggle cursor)

How can I reintegrate the Invoices_ with filemaker server?

There are no errors in the application log. A recover was performed on Invoices_.fp5 and the filemaker service restarted, still reports that the file cannot be found.

In desperation I have removed fmp server 5.5 and optigold from the server, reinstalled and placed backup copies of the databases. Now it works but I have hours of work ahead of me. All the customer establish and exipiration dates have been reset to May 15th, for some smart reason. Can I repair the expiration dates somehow (yeah right) or will I have to manually fix each case?

Good lord. After restoring the backup, all payments and billing cycle items are gone. This is essentially starting over on my month-long import from quickbooks. How can I ensure that future "backups" are valid? Can you cite a recommended backup procedure? Some kind of data/index integrity verification. Anything?

Are you running the normal backup built into FileMaker Server?

I was doing both. I had periodically stopped the filemaker service, copied the files, and restarted the service. Also, Filemaker was set to backup the files; these filemaker backups are the only ones that work at all, and only after a reinstall of fm and og. Which technique do you recommend for the future?

I've always just used the one built into FileMaker Server (no need to stop the service then).

And restoring that backup is performed by stopping the service and simply placing the .fp5 files in place, right? Or is there another step I'm missing. I wonder where my problem lies; could the backups all be corrupted despite a functional system at the time of backup?

Correct, that's how it would be done.
