Fox enjoys its large market share because of its practice of hiring ex-beauty queens and good looking news anchors. Their viewership may equal all the rest of the cable broadcasts combined, but we enjoy a few very distinct advantages from our smaller market share.

1) Fox News is one voice, vs our many voices. If one person says something is bad and 8 people say something is good, we tend to go with the voice of 8 over the voice of one.

2) Fox, and to a much larger extent, MSNBC have become so blatant with slanted programing, viewers tend to apply a lens or filter to the content they put out. The rest of the news outlets, which we unquestionably own, tend to do a better job playing "straight man", making efforts to appear unbiased. This subtle delivery of a biased political message is much more effective than beating people over the head with
your politics.

I am personally a bit put out that ABC has "come out of the closet" to champion Obama's health care plan, hosting their broadcast from the White House and denying all opposing voices airtime. They would be much more effective in selling Obama's health care program if they allowed a few of the worst done commercials opposing the proposed health care plan to have airtime during the segment. It would give them the appearance of neutrality and they could pre-screen the oppositions commercials and use them as teed up questions for Mr. Obama to rebut.

 

FOX enjoys its large market share for the same reason Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Hannity, and the million other conservative radio talk show hosts dominate the AM airwaves. Because conservatives love hearing other conservatives blowhardily blather on about how stupid liberals are.

Murdoch basically took what had already been going on on Am radio for years and translated it to cable TV. You could say it was a brilliant move, but really, the formula had been proven for years, just in a different medium.

The game changer was that Murdoch's operation pretty gave up any pretense of being impartial, which has really more than anything else caused the paradigm shift in cable news.

Now all the networks blatantly are going after different demographics. It's just that MSNBC's is a losing demo when it comes to this sort of entertainment. All the liberals who care about listening to other liberals hate on conservatives are probably commenting on the daily kos and not watching MSNBC.
