I was wondering if it's illegal to give out information on how-to hack stuff. Please comment on this. Thanks
http://revision3.com/thebroken This kind of information. If it IS illegal then how come these guys are not sued or stopped?
It depends how things are done. If its absolutely illegal then a complaint will be sent to your host, who will take you offline (most of the time). Around this there can be somewhat of a legal grey area, depending where and how you do things. However , not too long ago I had a chat with the guys from http://www.spirit-international.net/ This is a part of their reply: Basically if you want to go sure that you won't get closed down you can go to these offshore companies.
Does it not depend on what they teach alot of people learn how to hack so they no how to protect there own work but then you do get the people who want to just hack sites for fun and kill the site that is the illegal bit aint it. Most good programmers know how to hack but they dont use it to harm peoples sites in england you can go and get a degree at uni for hacking it started in 2005 so if they are showing you how to hack how can it be illegal.
However, it is not illegal to disclose exploits. There are numerous reputable sites and forums that already do that. Some even provide demonstrative code for exploits... it's a fine line, depends on how you approach it.
If you are divulging information specifically for defacing, stealing cc's, stealing passwords... ect, then yes it is illegal. However if you are discussing programming, basic security hardening, and technological modifications then no it is not illegal. It depends on what type of content you are offering, if it's 'cracking' then it's illegal. If it's 'hacking' then no it's not
I would suggest offering "how to hack stuff" PLUS lots of info on "How to prevent these hacks" I think your site will do very well
Sometimes these companies back themselves up by saying they don't tell people this information to allow them to hack, but they tell it to them so they can secure their own site better Mark
These things are illegal. If you get caught, you can get sentence upto 10 years These guys are taking he advantage of "IF you are caught"
Well it depends on how you're providing it and for what purpose, but most of the times it'll be consider as illegal.
If its illegal how come you can go to University and get degree in hacking you just have to agree that you wont use anything your learnt to harm or do anything illegal.
The word Hacking is not a bad thing at all. It is actually a good thing. Just read any dictionary online and you'll get the proper definition.
If you suggest it is for informative and educational purposes only you can do it just fine, as long as you dont mention 'illegal' practices, hacking uses tools/exploits/known issues in most cases and is privvy to freedom of information, if it is more of an education/informative 'look this is how DoS works, these are tools people use and this is how they would go about it, exploiting thek nown issue with such and such' then you are not doing anything illegal... I should know they had a 'Blackhat networking, let's see how secure networks really are' lecture at my local university, where they even demonstrated DoS, trojan use, keylogging techniques and even phishing techniques, the tools an dinformation IS NOT illegal, it's how you use it (for example the ddemonstrations were played out against the Universities' private network, with full permission, no law is broken)
Hell you can even find full Linux distributions pre-bundled with many hacking tools + tutorials and databases of info, which is totally legal, it's just HOW the user uses these tools/information privately that can be seen as illegal. login - it is not even illegal to practice the information, unless you practice it in an illegal manner, go to any bank in the world and youll find they pay through their teeth for people with high qualifications in network security TO try and use these tools and info to penetrate (hack) their systems. No one here ever heard of 'Blackhat', 'Whitehat', 'Greyhat' security?
Thats true. But will just a disclaimer be fine? Again the information is showing how to and counter hack.
