Giving away free stuff to attract traffic?

I am new to this whole blogging and building websites.. Actually I just registered my first domain a week ago. My question is do you guys offer free stuff or contests to attract traffic? Is it worth it? Do you guys see a huge increase in traffic? Thanks

 

I have offered a free ebook for traffic...I ended up gettting a review in a couple of print mags...I did see a little bump...later I forced folks to give me their email addy to get the ebook...downloads slowed, but my email list increased big time...

I would suggest that you give away free stuff, but make sure it is worth something...in addition, get their email address...I didn't receive enough traffic to warrant not getting their email addy...

 

Giving away (good) free stuff is a fine idea. If word of the contest spreads, you could definitely see an increase in traffic.

I hosted a domain name giveaway for 1 month and gained 92 new subscribers without even promoting the contest.
