Normally, these many links on the index page are not recommended but I do have over 100 links at the homepage of my site www.buywebdirectories.com and I don't think I faced any problems:)

yes, they would effect your rankings but if these are internal links, these could also get your inner pages spidered - if that is what you are looking for:)

Google and all other search engines says that no more than 25 links, but I have seen tons of sites with 100, 200 and more

So nothing is true and nothing is false

can you show me where google say that? I know they say it's recommended no more than 100, but they don't even say that it's really so bad to have more than 100...it's just recommended...

You need a good structuring of your information. A sitemap or list of all articles can easily have a 100 links, no problem. Used to be that google didn't index the whole page when it was too long, but they stretched that up a bit. Usually the main page should have links to all the categories or subjects of your site. I do about 25 links on the main page, including a link to the sitemap which has links to all subjects. Since most of those links are descriptive of the content, it should help google determine what the page is about.

If you have good structure, the amount of links may not be the problem. You may want to get more links from trusted sites to your website, so google realizes it is worth something.
