Question: How good is Gigablast? Would they make a good choice to license for a search engine project?

How so? Why should we use them instead of another search provider?

I am not so keen on Gigablast. Not sure, how many people actually using it.

Are you looking to create your own search engine? If so, then try Nutch.

I've played with Nutch, but for my application, I'm more concerned with the search database quality. I want some good results and to outsource the spider part.

Bad idea. Any server/search engine running Apache will ultimately be a lot slower than Google.
    Try Lighttpd

Huh? Lighttpd is a web server, not a search engine. Regardless, Nutch is the back end - you can use whatever web server you wish to use as the "front end". Crawl the web - put results in database - use Nutch to pull results or write your own middleware.

Maybe I need to clarify my question a little bit. I am wanting to start a search engine portal. I do not want to run my own spider. I just want to focus on the usability and GUI so I can do some new stuff to make searching more fun. I also want to try some new ways to tie in ads and social media. Is Gigablast's engine and database a good one to license?

I see Gigablast crawling my site all the time, but I've never really used it.
