GIF Trouble

My site, JustSomeThought.com has a ton of GIFs. Too many GIFs on one page slow down the page performance tremendously. So I was wondering if there was a script that could preview one frame of the GIF and then link to the GIF. Otherwise I will have to go into photoshop with every GIF, take a single frame out and save it as a separate image that will link to the GIF. I'm just trying to keep it simple with a script. Any ideas?

Maybe Image magic / Yahoo Widgets - it will do folders of them at a time. (thumbnail generator)

So do these options just generate a preview image?

Look at this page. I used the thumbnail generator to make small images of my folder of huge images. I just "dragged" the folder of big images into the widget and clicked a couple of sizing settings, and it created a folder of thumbnails separately in one swoop.

PS. I've never used this method for animated/gif images.
