This is a question i have about large search engines like google.

If you look on google for "a" it supposedly returns 16,340,000,000 results (actually you wont be able to go through all the result pages will end on 90 or so).
Where they go fetch the number 16,340,000,000? Is it a database query or stored number? If so it means they have stored counters for all large queries?

I would imagine they cache the results data as much as possible.
