Getting website on GOOGLE

I know this is a common question. I've made a number of simple websites in the past, but always had trouble getting them on major search engines like google. I know there are companies, etc that you can pay, and they "submit your website" to a number of search engines, but I don't really believe it does much.

Is there anything concrete to be able to get on google? (and thus, get more visitors?). Is there anything specific with coldfusion code that may help out?

Yeah, i've looked here. I'll look into it more though. Some of it just seems a but complex, ... and also, it seems like a website age ranks pretty high in their formula.

But, do you have any personal ideas you've used in the past that has worked, or you feel may work well?

Unfortunately, I'm relatively new to SEO so I think we're in the same boat there.
