Did you already sent a sitemap to the search engines? This helps alot for indexing your site

You need to do in depth keyword research to find the keyphrases you wish to target. It's pointless going after phrases like 'football forum' at the beginning because they're just way too competitive.

Then you need to do proper SEO, and a large amount of it.

That's the SEO / ranking side of things, as a forum admin myself it helps to fake your visitor / post count initially (modify the template) and create a few users (3-4) and post regularly as them ... this will make your site look busier and encourage more people to join. Nothing looks worse than a forum with only the admin posting.

Once you've done some good KW research, perhaps run a small adwords campaign or competition to bring links and traffic ( a giveaway?)

Another thing that you can do is pay forum posters to start threads. and then do some payed adverting in niche websites

    Hi @S-Tan

I'm definitely agree with the @fridz recommended strategy about getting involved with some other football forums and blogs then start commenting like crazy with your signature at the bottom.

If you work out a daily plan of 10 - 15 forums and blogs to connect with each day, you'll start seeing traffic for sure.

Also, if someone comments on your forum.. respond immediately. No fun being in a forum with no other people. Also, you could try creating some other reasons for people to come to your website... maybe offer up your football picks before the big games each week. :)

Ads are always very important in marketing. Your ads should be appearing on all the relevant main websites, where your visitors have a large probability to go

you need to get the word out, setup accounts and write articles on sites such as blogger, wordpress, squidoo, ezine articles etc then simply add links back to your website.
also make sure your site it optimized for search engines (SEO) to ranked well in listing for common search phrases.

Well, you will need to approach football fans and tell them why they should join your forum. Putting up more interesting content that can't be found elsewhere help to attract them to visit your forum & become a member. Good luck.
