Getting subdomains on serps!

    Hi-

    Is it easy index and rank subdomains of a high PR (PR>4) domain than doing a normal domain ?

    For example,

    Lets say a domain of PR 5 called mydomain.com exists and I'm starting a new site on a new subdomain mykeyword.mydomain.com.

    Is it easy to index and rank well this subdomain for "mykeyword" ? ( considering the high PR and other factors of mydomain.com )

    Thanks,
    Tuning

    No, a subdomain is treated as a new url. You would have to gain backlinks like you did for the original domain.

    Exactly, a subdomain is a new site, it doesn't matter what PR your main site has.

    Thanks 1234244 and fryman.

    I have another question on same topic.

    How will be co-op weight calculated if we are having many subdomains ranked well ?

    True, however in Google there is always a strong emphasis on the domain name itself. When you have a domain that is old and clean, you can build subdomains and rank fairly quickly for them because Google likes the domain name it is built upon.

    @sitetutor,
    Thanks for the info! btw, is it better to use subdomains than using seperate folders for each sub section on a site ?

    @fryman,

    If we have subdomains ranking well , then how will be coop weight calculated.(Since we can only have an account per domain.)

    If I'm running coop on main domain. Will the sub domains are also considered for coop weight ?

    PS: Sorry for my crappy english. ( its 1 AM here :( )

    I think folders are good when the content is related to the home page and subdomains are better when it doesn't.

    I would rather use a subdomain than a folder. For example, if your site is about cars, and you then create a folder with a site about dogs, it is almost sure that when you put up your adsense banners you will still get ads about cars. Happened to me several times until I figured out what was causing that.

    And yes, a subdomain would be a different site, so you can use it as a new site and get new weight from it.

    mike is right. google loves established domains, so creating a subdomain from an established domain tends to get ranked faster.

    someone who went to the SES conference this year said that people were talking about quick ways to rank new domains. what they do is make a subdomain off of an established domain and get that ranked first. then they 301 redirect it to their new domain name giving it a quick boost in rankings (this is to avoid the 'new site' sandbox filter)

    Subdomains are very useful, you just need to look at how many good rankings about.com has with using them

    I have a domain whose PR is 1, but one of its sub domain has PR of 5.

    So there seems to be no relation between domain and sub-domian in terms of Page Rank.

    PageRank is not an indicator whether your domain name will rank or not.
