I have a few sites so don't need anything big. I am tired of waiting for others to fix things. So what would I need to do to host my own sites and it be secure?

Hmmm I am sorry. Not sure how to answer that. I just want to host my own websites from my own home.

    that's rarely a good idea

how could you afford the T1 line to provide the bandwidth? or the server? or the backup system?

It's usually much easier to go with paid hosting, even a cheap host, but one where you have full control

Yeah running your sites off your computer isn't a great idea. I would consider a modest shared hosting package somewhere. Emails wouldn't get blocked and you would have reliable space for everything.

Shared hosting means you're sharing the server with other folks. Dedicated hosting on the other hand will have only your sites.
