How do you guys even get started with backlinks? I've been searching blogs for the last few hours and every single one uses nofollow for comment links. Frustrating!
zlib, There are many ways to get links apart from blog commenting. Some will work for you and some won't. Some will be more suited to your business/niche some won't. Blog comments are fine for establishing yourself as an expert within your niche, but most likely will not pass much organic ranking value. A good place to start is to a. Monitor/track a couple of leaders within your niche. Who stands out? Who is in the top 10 for your search queries? b. Once you have two or three competitors, search their links using http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com and find out where these competitors are getting their links from, i.e. directories, blog posts, press releases, partner links, reciprocols, viral content, articles, videos etc etc. What content are they creating? What content is earning them natural links? Then ask yourself. Can I emulate what they are doing and then go one better? This should give you a good start. Once you are up and running you get a bit more creative and find other ways of building links. There are many sources out there. Just google for "link building 101". You should find lots. You could follow my blog as well or follow me on Facebook which should give you some suggestions.(links in my signature below). If you have the money, www.seomoz.org have great tools which are great for analysing your competitors link profiles. Hope this helps. Good luck!
To track your backlinks, and what people use to link to you (the natural way) you can check bluebacklinks.com , they list the anchor text + obl links, which is very usefull
As above frens mentioned, u can use yahoo site explorer for analyzing backlinks of competitors. U can use Market Samurai for this purpose. Analyze backlinks and try to get two backlinks from where competitors is getting one. And Build natural links too...
You can use "fast blog finder" to find do follow blogs to comment on. In my experience, I don't think it is necessary to care too much about a link is dofollow or nofollow.
To determine if the blog is do follow or no follow, you can use plugins from mozilla or Chrome. SEOQuake can do the work.
