Getting started buying and selling domains

I've done the search on the forum but got too confusing results.
I know that this is a great way to get some money and eventually, with experience, get allot of money.

My question is, what are the basics on buying and selling domains?
Of course the main part is finding the domain, buy it and sell it to the highest bidder.

What i'm looking for is the techniques to do it successfully over and over again.
And also, how much money do you usually spend too improve domain rankings?

You have to invest time and effort in learning. These forums (and other domain-specific ones) are excellent to start you off especially if you want free information.

One of the important basics is buying good names in the first place i.e. domains that have the potential to appreciate in value.
A lot of people, when they start in the business, think it's a game and begin registering every domain they can think of. Then suddenly find themselves with dozens of worthless names.
Take it slow. Don't expect to make a big sale overnight. Many domainers will tell you patience is key.

The best thing you can do is scour forums for information and tips, take them with a grain of salt, and apply the tips that seem logical. Think it through, then apply. Hope this helps.

Buying and selling domains is a hard business now because so many people are doing it and a few big dogs have already bought up most of the good ones and jacked the prices up. I am not saying you can't do it but just plan it out and make sure you know your stuff if not you are just throwing you money away with some domains you buy.

I actually got and found 3 domains that are free and might be worth the time and money.
Is there any way to check what's the potential of a domain? Like a tool or something?

At this point in the game, which is 10 years late to acquire any "Blockbuster" domains, if you want to get into selling premium, high value domains, you are going to have to invest some real money to get some in your portfolio.

You are not going to find very many, if any, domains that are available that are worth anything to anyone except new webmasters.

In other words, without any money to invest, you cannot have a beef jerky budget, and expect to sell at prime rib prices. Those days are over. IF you have $40 to spend on a domain, it will probably always be worth $40, if not less as the market settles and people start to realize that imagination does not equal any value to anyone.

Development of websites is another story and another industry.

One of the aspects of domaining is expired domains, where you snap up domains that were not renewed by their original owner. Some of these domains can be pretty high value... lwe.com, disneyresort.com, shat.com, "dropped" (or expired and were available for reg) in the past couple months.

If you're interested in learning about this side of the industry, I've written a bunch of articles and answered a few FAQs in the Help section of my site.

Just dont bother with selling names on DP, the buying market have reg fee budgets and expect 5 char dictionary .coms

Although what does sell good here is PR5 & 6 domains with no backlinks that will sink like a rock.

If you want a premium domain, stick to one word .coms

Thats probably the best advice I could give

Dictionary .coms are definitely the safest bet, however the brandable ones are incredibly expensive already. Another option is to look at other TLDs like .net and .co.uk - it's still going to cost a lot for dictionary words but not as much as .com. Travel.info recently sold for $116,000 so there is potential in other TLDs.

My advice would be to spend time reading all you can on domains on the net & domain forums & don't spend any money until you start to understand what makes a name valuable, otherwise you'll end up wasting a lot of money, like many newbies to the industry.
