Hi there, everyone. Basically, I'm looking to get into the business of buying and selling the odd domain name here and there, and I need some help with a couple of things. I'd really appreciate it if the experts on this forum and those with experience in this field could help me out with my questions, point me in the right direction, and generally just provide some tips and warnings. My first question is this. After doing a bit of research, I recently bought a co.uk domain name from someone. However, I've only just realised that it costs £10 to get Nominet to change the name of the domain name registrant, which is obviously registered to the person who owned it before me. This new development has really annoyed me, none of the research that I did told me that I would need to pay an extra £10 (on top of what I've already paid to the original domain owner) to Nominet just to change the registrant. Why does it even cost £10, surely it's far too much just to change who the domain is registered to? So, to start with, I just wanted to confirm that this £10 cost is definitely required to change the domain name's registrant, or am I missing something here? Does everyone else here that buys and trades in .co.uk domain names pay this cost per domain name, every time? Second question: to be entirely honest, at the moment I'm worried that the domain name I've just bought may not be legally mine. Is buying and selling domain names perfectly legal and accepted: would I be recognised as the legal owner of this domain name now that I've bought it off someone? Is there any paperwork or documentation that I need in order to legally prove that I own the domain name? I really don't want to sell on this domain name only to find that it's not legally mine. Lastly, I'd just like some general advice on buying and selling domain names. Does anyone here have any tips that they can give from their own experience, precautions on things to look out for, etc. I'd also really appreciate it if someone could give me a general overview of the domain buying and selling process: having never done it before, a brief overview of everything that takes place in the buying and selling of a domain name would be really really good. Hope everyone can answer all the questions I have and help out this newbie in need. Once again, thanks so much in advance, I really do appreciate the help.
to change the name of the domain name registrant It usually costs and what you have paid is fair. A charge is made if it is transfered from one registrar to another. If you are buying an available new domain name that is free in other words not registered under any ones name then you would only pay around $10 to buy it. Yes you will own the name in that you can use it but technically contrary to popular belief you do not own it ! you only have the right to use it. You can register a domain name for varying amounts of yrs but a . Au domain name must be registered for a min of 2yrs buying and selling domain names is perfectly legal and accepted: would I be recognised as the legal owner of this domain name now that I've bought it off someone? YES Is there any paperwork or documentation that I need in order to legally prove that I own the domain name? I really don't want to sell on this domain name only to find that it's not legally mine. Its not necessary to have paperwork as such you should check on whois(dot)net and see that you are the registered owner Be carefull of buying a name that has any trademarks within the name even if the owner tells you its legal. any more questions drop me a pm Im sure if you google buying and selling domain names there is plenty of info around but you could write pages about domain names so to talk about it here would take a lot of space lol.
Personally I do not know much about extensions such as those for the UK. Best advice I can give you though is hold off before spending much money or buying many domain names. Take your time and read and learn as much as you can. There are countless individuals who are new to domains, that buy a ton of horrible names that are not even worth the registration fee that they paid. Do yourself a favor and keep researching, learning, and asking questions. Then ease into buying some names.
In the past, (not really knowing what I was doing, but it worked for me), when I would sell a small lot of names, I would create a second *free* account (completely new username/password/email at my Registrar, then Push the names over to it that I would be selling as a package. This didn't cost me anything. Once payment was received, I simply relinquished control over the account which held those domain names to the new owner, who would then just change the password and email address to their own. Again, I don't know if this was kosher, I just know it worked. It's been years since I bought/sold domain names. Usually when I purchased domains, I did have to pay transfer fees, unless the seller would push them into my personal account at the same Registrar, which then, of course, was free.
Yes, that's what I was afraid of, lol. Ok, so basically, as long as I'm listed as the Registrant of the domain name, which I should be after I pay the
Personly I never had anything with domain name sales, but I plan to get in it on future, first product which I'm gona buy is flippin crusher, because it seems to cover everything, from A to Z. Hope this will help you
The 10 fee that I now have to pay is to Nominet, the company who own and distribute .uk domain names: basically .uk's equivalent to .com's ICANN. They require that a 10 fee + VAT (a UK tax on goods sold) is paid to change the name of the Registrant that the domain name is registered to. I personally think it's really pricey for nothing but a name change, but there doesn't seem to be any way around it other than paying.[/QUOTE] You cannot compare .co.uk with .com because .com is generic top level domain extension and .uk is mostly appreciated by the Briton. though .uk is an open extension but you cannot compare it to.com they are no match. Now you have just scale through the first step in domain buying and selling. The next step is to know what to buy and how to flip and that is the most difficult aspect of domaining business.
The domain name game has seriously changed over the years. I've been buying them to develop and resell since 1996 and honestly would LOVE to sell 95% of my portfolio. I would suggest the following. 1. Protect yourself. Become an LLC/LLP so if a company comes after you for TM infringement you'll be covered - expect this to happen and to lose domains in the process. 2. Stay diverse and develop. A basic developed "static" site is worth more than domain alone and shows you purchased it in good faith. 3. Learn to love Escrow.com, you can charge the buyer with their fee's and is great protection for both parties. 4. Communicate with the buyer and if your gut tells you they're shady terminate the deal.
