Getting red carded for replying to old posts

It's not clearly stated in the forum, that we can't reply to old threads. But with the ability to search on the forum and to still be able to make comments - why still get red carded?

I think people get a thrill out of having the same topic brought up, so they can post "search for it, its been discussed" :D

but I'm replying to threads which I still think are relevant and have a point...

Surely Shawn could lock threads after a certain age, so what I'm doing is no big deal right?

You cheeky so and so. What consistutes a "bump"? I was replying to a thread which was relevant and got red carded...strange stuff.

In another example, what if someone posted a question and I was able to answer it? Would that be considered a bump also? I can't create a new topic as that would be a duplicate post also (read the Faq/rules).

This forum is starting to be complicated and if I can't reply to posts on this forum then I'll take my presence elsewhere...

About how old are the threads you 'bump'??!!!

Bump = Replying to old posts.

I don't know the actual rules.

But if you're genuinely adding something new that may be correcting old info, or scheding new light I can't see the proplem.

But then if you're doing that, there's perhaps it would be better to say "hey I found this old thread" link to it, sum it up and they say what you think that's new.

The summation would save people having to dredge back through the thread to see what it was all about...

People can give you rep for whatever *they* want. There are no forum guidelines for giving rep.

If somebody has posted a question and it has not been answered in a few weeks then its fair to say the thread is dead.

This week I have noticed more old threads than normal getting bumped and I am putting it down to shawns new feature showing the age of the threads.

I am not saying it this that is causing the bumps but before I never noticed how old the threads were unless I opened them but now I can see that somebody has bumped a 542 day old thread without having to read it.

There was one great bump this week where SE Basic had asked whether there were any seo contests going on about 2 years ago and somebody replied to say there were some good ones and he should search for it or something.

Whenever I want to reply to an old post like that I just pm the author or start another thread with that topic. I've seen people post to a thread that was 1.5 years old. Good luck

Sounds too complex to pm the author and starting a (duplicate) new thread.

I wouldn't mind something in the rules about abusing the Red Card's, perhaps putting a limit on how many you can send in a day/week.

Of course it's no big deal, but seeing a red card next to your profile can put people off replying to your posts...

My first post on DP was a reply to an "old post". I really didn'tknow any better and it resulted in a red hit. I guess you might call it a learning curve. Some people around here do et a little trigger happy and don't give the new guys much slack.

There is. You can't give more than 10 reps a day, and you have to rep 20 members before you can rep the same member again. You got knocked in to the red for making this thread complaining about geting red rep. The unpardonable sin here at DP is complaining about red rep!!!! :D (No, I didn't red you.)

do you have any idea what it can start?

Newbies all over this place will start thinking there's a PR update now and everyone will keep posting there.. but after all there's a good chance no one notices it was you :)
