Right, for starters no one will join an empty forum.

So, to get normal people to join you have to populate it. Tell all your friends to join and post regularly, participate in post exchange (postfusion is good) and hire paid posters.

Once it gets around 1000 posts it will look active and people will join so they can talk. The majority of members will come from search engines, so do seo.

Purchased 4000 directory submissions and any other ways to get links and this will help you climb in the serps so you get more visits.

Start a posting competition with a prize that will make people want to post.

Post your forum in a non-spam way to forums with a similar target audience or niche.

I would suggest to write some articles about your forum's topic. Remember, people need to have a reason to post and view your forum!

Hey I'm willing to trade some posts if you would like to put some on mine. I also have a newly established forum.

GreekTalks.com. It's basically a forum for Fraternity and Sorority Students.

As an active admin, you should spell out your words, and use a spell checker.

Please, don't take offense to that, as I myself am an atrocious speller and could not spell my name without a spell checker in place (lol) but really, it WILL help, as no one really wants to join a forum where the leader looks like a moron (not really calling ya a moron, but ya know what I mean, right?).

Slang is not so bad, the lingo for your niche is fine, netspeak is a huge NO NO (any1, u, r, etc) it's just a turn off to many well-to-do would be members that can spell correctly.

    My 2 cents:

Polls, open questions, controversial discussions all this helps, "tempt" people not only to read and lurk and hang around but to register and to post actively. Get a "welcome mod" if you haven't already. Don't answer every post immediately yourself, give other members the chance also to voice their opinion, but make sure every post gets answered. Do you monitor your traffic? Where is it coming from, can that be improved, how can it be converted, what are you doing regarding SEO??? Can you get your link on some other student/ uni web sites? Building a forum and running it (or it you ;-) is a lot of fun - and a hell of work, SY

Any other tip a can add to those posted above is that you can also write some great and informative material such as tutorials, guidelines, how to's (as far as I have see you've already created some forums concerning this subject). Above all, do not just put them in place and leave running. Promote it.

Tell your friends (even better if they're the target audience) about your forums.

Make everyone feel welcome to contribute to the forums, e.g. contest with prizes mentioned above.

Finally, you may want to hire a community manager, a good one anyway. It's a great way of moving your website to the higher level.

Growing and maintaining forums is not easy to accomplish but if you do, it gives a wonderful feeling of winning.
