Getting others into Adsense--any luck?

When I started in Adsense a few years ago, several people online told me the same thing: You'll tell your friends about this great new way to make money, they'll ooh and aah over it, some of them will talk about starting a site of their own, and in the end not one of them will do it. I read that and thought, "Psh, my friends are different! They're web-savvy, they're eloquent, they're broke. Some of them will start sites of their own if I show them how." Years later--nothing. Not a single one, even among the unemployed ones, has so much as started a site.

So I was wondering, has anyone else gotten a friend to do Adsense? Or is this experience pretty much universal?

(Note: I know you're not supposed to tell your friends about your sites. I was idealistic and stupid, and I always added, "but don't click any of the ads.")

You should be concentrating on gaining income with adsense for yourself, not your friends. If you start making decent income from adsense, believe me your friends will quickly jump on board with a lot of questions to ask you.

I am and I did. They have asked me all kinds of questions and shown keen interest, but none of them did anything about it. How about you? Have any of your friends started Adsense after seeing your success?

I wouldn't say I'm successful, but the money does go much farther in some parts of the world.

My little sites have been earning pretty steadily with basically zero effort after the week I spent setting them up a few years back, and a little maintenance twice a year. Here in Malaysia it comes to about double what a restaurant waiter or security guard earns, and close to the starting salary for a fresh college graduate in some fields.

When I mentioned it to some friends once, a few of them were quite interested. But as soon as they realised they would have to learn something new (web site development/management) the interest seemed to evaporate.

It was surprising to me, because it's not really all that complicated, and if I put a little more effort into it, I could probably build up a comfortable middle-class Malaysian salary on Adsense alone.

Another issue - in addition to the learning part - is that earning money in this fashion seems quite strange, and most people feel safer investing in their career. People here are pretty conservative in some ways, and it takes a lot to shake them out of the "school -> job -> marriage -> house -> promotion -> kids -> retirement" life plan.

Several became interested, but two really got serious about using adsense on websites.

Maybe they are into the business and are not telling you, following the rule you stated yourself. ;)

People tend to get interested when I have a pay check in my hands, but soon lose interest when I explain how I got it.
