How hard is it to actually top the “big dogs” for popular keywords?
Have you (post reader) topped any keywords that get more then 1 mill search a month? If so how long did it take you?
(If you have any other relative information on the subject please post)

I highly recommend that you not try to compete with the "big boys" (unless of course you have deep pocket$)
    (1) most "big boys" are already established, been on the net for a while
    (2) most "big boys" have thousands (even millions) of in bound links
    (3) most "big boys" have a team of SEO/SEM experts that are paid to keep the rankings up..
there are other factors like changed algorhthms etc..
I prefer to try to be the "big dog" in less popular keyword searches (150,000 or less)
but this is just my opinion

Depending on the domain name you have, the expertise you have (personally or with a third party) with search engine optimization, connections with other websites and traffic generation sources, and traffic flow organization, you could have a hard time or a really hard time.

But either way if you monetize it right, it'll be worth it no matter what.

    I agree.

I am fighting for Java keyword :) but i know that i can not be on the first page. My point is that if i fight for Java keyword, that will help me for 2 or 3 word keywords (e.g. java tutorial) in the long term.

Hey there good idea to go for "long tail keywords" which are less popular, less competitive and less searched for, but choosing the right long tail keywords can significantly increase website traffic from organic search results (SERPS)....
I used a "tool" of mine for your keyword "java"
    http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=1&hl=en
take a look and experiment yourself, hopefully this helps

There are keyword tools which does that job better than the tool you proposed. I am using them.

And about using long tail keywords: You are right, they are very important. But instead of targeting them with an old and already developed site, i chose to develop several smaller sites targetting those long tails exactly ;). I guess this will work better sicne i know how to obtain backlink in my area.

Thanks, I have your "keyword" tools already in favorites..thing is Overture is a Yahoo based tool while the tool I provided is based on Google results , I will use overture (primarily) for ranking on yahoo pages but anyway I found that using more than one keyword tools and comparing the results help me out a lot..Now getting relevant inbound links (without paying for them) is a little harder at least for me!
