I use press releases and article marketing for the backlinks mostly, only a few article directories will send you any significant traffic. I guess submitting articles for backlinks is borderline grey hat, but I haven't ever heard of anyone getting in any trouble for it. Some people find blogs and forums related to their niches and leave comments and signature links. One thing about competition levels is that the amount doesn't really matter as much as how difficult will it be to get on Google's 1st page, or how tough the competition is on that page. Low competition is just an indicator that because there are less sites competing that percentage wise it SHOULD be easier to get a good ranking. In theory anyway.
