    Hey Guys,
well im currently on an advanced shared hosting plan, my sites in total are getting about 5k hits a day and the hosts are kicking up a fuss so i have decided to go dedicated.
I havnt really been looking around that much but i have checked out rackforce and they seem reasonable,
this is what ive looked at, is it any good? is it not enough?
    Package: 5000-X Dedicated Server
    OS: Cent OS
    Admin Software: Plesk 8 - 30 Domains
    CPU: Intel Xeon 3.0 Ghz
    Ram: 2 GB DDR SDRAM
    Storage: 80 GB SATA HD
    Bandwidth: Dedicated 1.5 Mbps Unmetered
    Tech Support: Premium Support
Firewall: Fortigate Pack - all three
    Backup: No Backups
    Monitoring: No Monitoring
    IP Addresses: 2 IPs

it depends also on what your needs are, are you a host provider? or just for your own sites?
if you are, youll probably want more than the 30 domain limit with plesk there (do they offer cpanel as an alternative?)

i'd also look to see if you can get a 2nd hdd in there too, and look into what they'd charge for backup solutions (eg remote ftp space) as regular backups are certainly essential.

otherwise, its a nice powerful machine :)

I think a P4 would be enough for you if you arent willing to sell hosting on the server as well.

    2 GB RAM + 2 GB SWAP

I would recommend 1 GB is enough for you.

I think 5K uvs with advance shared hosting are ok, but since servers are over sold so you are facing this problem,

For a start, I will recommend you to buy a VPS from ServInt.net or modvps.com, both rates and specification are quite reasonable.

Also do a WHT search before buying server.

Im not planning on selling any hosting, i just want fast web hosting that isnt really expensive, for that set up im looking at 259USD..
But after giving it some thought, there must be something that is alot cheaper.. I only need a server or VPS that can easily cope with 5-10k Uniques a day,
The reason i thought i might need dedicated is because one of my sites is a forum which usually has a minimum of 40 people online, Another is a downloads site with a MYSQL Backend, Wordpress BLog, AV Arcade script site + i want to set up a file hosting site.

Yeh for these type of websites, you may need dedicated server. But for start try a VPS, whats your monthly budget for hosting?

5K hits is nothing...but the type of sites you're planning to host may use up good amount of resources.

VPSs for you start at $30/month and you can get good dedi boxes for as low as $80 a month...browse WHT offers sections.

everything looks except 1.5mbps line , get a 100mbps line . or atleast a 10mbps line , 1.5 is useless it can give max 486 gb of BW .

That too a file hosting site you will need 100mbps unmetered line ideally .

In the US that will cost ~1000$ / mth.... is that realistic for this project?

Remember that 1.5mbps unmetered is about 495GB Bandwidth.
Also, if there are many users at same time your connection may just be flooded and the site will be very slow due to the 1.5mbps won't be able to handle them all and will just slow down the whole page viewing.

Its a ideal requirement . 1.5mbps can only give 486gb BW , that too at a low cost , so 100mbps with even 500gb bw is better .

Hi Nickower, you are saying that you are not opening a much big hosting site, right? then why pay so huge amount? 1K$ per month are very very high.

Buy a dedicated from LayeredTech.com, it will cost u around 100 to 150 $s to buy a server good configuration.

    Hope this helps.

You shouldn't need a dedicated for 5K hits. Any shared plan should handle that. Try host gator or dream host. They won't kick you for that traffic. If your looking dedicated then head over to the planet.

Try dediwebhost if you're lookig ofr cheap server.

FDC are good if you need damn dirt cheap bandwidth. They have good reviews except from me. I will give them a BIG negative!

Curious to know the reason behind your negative feedback for FDC.
