Google is a registrar, and it is believed they did so they could have access to the data. I don't think they have access to proxy registrations, but if you read the google patent, you will see them specifically address links from the same class "C" ip. You can't be sure of what google is currently using at any one time, but as I said, the chances of having an unbiased link from the same server are about zero. Common sense tells you that those links have a high probability of being from sites owned by the same person and there to help with SERPS - regardless of the whois data.

I have over 60 sites and have done a lot of testing over the last 3 years - and you do not want to cross link multiple sites you own if they are with the same host. At best, google will ignore it as a "vote" for your site, at worst, you'll get a penalty for a link farm.

If you have two related sites hosted on the same server, and there is a legitimate reason to have a cross link, then I wouldn't worry about a penalty - just don't expect it to help you with SERPS. Putting a footer with links to 5 other sites you own is another story. You can get shared hosting for as little as $5 - very cheap insurance if you want to cross link your sites.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. I've not read the patent but if it references the class c space that explains why so many folks ask about the cross linking issue.

I do have a very small collection of sites I publish - several of which are aviation related.

There does not appear, so far, to be a penalty with cross linking. And so far relates to 1997-today.

Not all are that old but a few are... which may also relate to my results... clearly they don't appear to G as new MFA sites.

Another question to those cloaking their aff links. Obviously Goog is looking at the outgoing link to determine if it is an aff link. But what about the incoming link for the banner image. Does this on matter at all? I would hate to have to change that one and loose my impressions data at CJ or LinkShare, etc.

    What about topsites links ?
They are also some kind of affiliates links . Should Google treat them like that ?

My pages are now out of Sup index!!! w00t!

    :) :) :D

But I'm not sure it's because of the changes I made recently. I see the cached pages are still the older versions.

Could just be part of the constant minor tweakage by Google engineers playing with the algo settings. Was it a tweak that put me in Sup or a tweak that took me out???? Or both?

Or were th pages re-crawled but the cache not updated yet?

I'm happy I'm out and waiting to see the traffic improve again. But I do wish I knew what the problem was.

Maybe too early to tell, they just came out of Sup index today.

    Update:

Its been a few days now and i see a few of the pages have been re-cached to the newer versions, but most pages are still older version with the site wide footer content and links, and unmasked affiliate ads.

So i suspect that my 3 weeks in Sup index was merely a temporary setback likely tied to nothing i did or was doing. Just one of those fluctuation things that happens with Google.

But traffic is back to stronger than it was before it went supplemental. I suspect that once all those updated pages get fully re-crawled and indexed, and the latest round of deep links I've obtained to the site, plus a few key authoritative outgoing links, are spotted by Google, my rankings will/should improve more. Will see in about a month, or so.
