Well its been within my expirence that you'll need a backlink on a higher pagerank site to pick up on your site. There is a site that i just opened and it was indexed within a few days. When I checked out the backlinks it was already on an existing higher page rank site. So my advice is to get those back links out...

Pay an attention on the content of your site.
It should be unique in order to google "like" it.

How do you check your site in google?

try to use these operators together in search filed

    site:url allinurl:url

    Wait Wait Wait ...........................

Get Good Quality Back links with Good PR need not be Paid One Only

    Use Sitemaps to Ping Google

Have some links in Blogs/forums with good content

    Submit to Directories Manually

But DOnt "SPAM" Else u will be thrown out !!!!!!!!!

I would say get as many permanent links as you can from sites that are related to yours. I think it's still the best way.

True Martian - It is the only way. Google will not index a site without atleast one link. If you get enough backlinks you can gain any ranking in the world. But without them your going nowhere.

Yahoo/MSN will index any site no matter the quality/backlinks.

Google Adwords doesn't influence organic search engine results.

And don't focus so much on PR but quality. A PR7 spam site is going to give you nothing while a PR2 quality site can help you alot. This is not always the case. Even some unrelated sites can help but you want quality relative one-way links from content pages not links pages.:)
