If a site subscribes to a directory how can that straight forward action be any reason why if the directory runs up against problems with search engines, the subscribed directory will be penalized.

I cannot see that happening .................... the offending site will be banned by the search engines and will just eventually close down

If a directory gets on the bad side of Google then the links from it would have no value. In no way will it hurt the submitter aside from loosing link value.

Sites listed in a bad directory does not have negative effects. Otherwise your competitors would be submitting all of the competition to FFA sites and get them all banned.
