Hi - I have recently revamped my web site and was hoping that Google would take note of my new site map and look at the site again. However, it keeps looking at the old (and now defunct) pages, rather than those listed in the site map... I really cannot understand what it going on. Suggestions welcome! Thanks, Michael www.steinbeck-reeves.co.uk
irunbackwards - hmm... was trying to get .htaccess to work but have been having some problems with it. Maybe I should persevere. Thanks, Michael.
Niche - Already done. That's why it is so frustrating that Google is avoiding my addresses on the sitemap...
Hi, What might work is try and create a new link for google to get excited about. It may just still be following the old link that got you indexed in the first place. Try and go to digg or propeller and create a fresh link back to your site for google to follow. Should get a fresh crawl within a few hours. Terry
Yep...make an xml sitemap and submit to through Google webmaster tools. Also try to get some external links to your new pages. If you're talking about http://www.steinbeck-reeves.co.uk/, Google doesn't recognize any back links yet. So get some more links from quality websites. Also I noticed that your navigation is exclusively through images. Search engines prefer a navigation path via text links. So it might be worth adding text link navigation at the bottom of the page.
Having a go with digg and propeller - will watch my log and see if anyone turns up! I have an xml sitemap already... no luck there, Google is still on the old version, despite having uploaded the new one and the revised new one. Re text links - I thought that would be sorted out by the sitemap. Am I wrong? Creating text links is a real PITA - do they have to be visible (can i do red on red etc.) or will Google notice? I am a bit new to this so, what is the best way to generate back links, other than phoning friends with their own sites? Do links from forums and bloggs count (I hope so or I have just wasted my time on Digg etc.)? Thanks so far everyone, Michael
I know you don't like the answer, but Google will re-index--eventually. It just takes time. We have moved around things ourselves a couple of times. If you are already in Google, then it's just a matter of time. Take it easy and work on content. A good golden rule from Google: "Make pages primarily for users, not for search engines."
there is a way to delete googles cache of your website. You can find this in google webmaster tools. Under tools, remove url's, delete cache. This option is for sites that have changed considerably.
Most pages 301 redirected - having problems .htaccess syntax though so some not done yet (I can't work out how to redirect sub directory entries en-mass i.e. everything in /property and below to index.html and how to strip off any arguments preceded by a space). Suggestions appreciated - other than read the manual - cannot work it out from any of the on-line help that I can find. Many thanks, Michael
Michaels-r, i know you said you already did the sitemap but if it's an existing sitemap then often deleting it from Webmasters and reloading the sitemap in Google Webmasters gets them to take another fresh look at your site.
Abercrombie - Yes, I thought the same and refreshed my sitemap about 4 days ago. Nothing as yet... Just really odd that Google is still checking pages that are not in the sitemap but were on the old site.
