Its not such easy as well, now a days ranking websites for longtail. Most of the People Started Ranking in Longtail terms.

 

The main thing here is keyword research. If done right, the rest would be smooth. Its all about searches and competition

As a matter of facts, backlinks are still the key factor for good rankings.

Diversity is key - just don't stick with one method.
Also, velocity is important - produce backlinks consistently, do not fire them all in one day and then stop.

Anyway, this is a good post and a nice read, especially for new players in this game.

Steve is dead on here. How do you think Google knew about JC Penney's recent misgivings? They clearly track the velocity of links + anchor text to a given domain/page and likely build a statistical model that pulls out there serious outliers, when they see these it's a clear sign that manipulation might be occurring.
