Anyone have any decent sources/strategies for getting external links to pages other than the main index page? No need to mention the coop I know about that one......

Other than writing articles with a direct link, do you use a program like Xenu to generate a sitemap which is linked to from your home page? You didn't mention how deep of links you are talking about, but a sitemap makes all links in your site no more than 2 clicks from the homepage.

I'm really looking for links from external sites to second level pages. So lets say I've got a page about shiny blue widgets that I'd love to promote in the SERPs but the site the page is on is not necessarily about shiny blue widgets. I'm already using the COOP and strong internal linking but I'd love to find some links from external sites too. Obviously most directories will only link to the top level page so they're out.

    Any suggestions?

Join Link Vault (my major source of deep links - see link in sig).

I request three text links in exchange for one on our 'exchange links' page and get all three from newer sites wanting to get a link from our more authority site. So I suggest changing your link exchange info on your site. Site owners who think they have earned the peaches to offer you one link for one link in view of your clear request for 3-1 are always worth a 1-1 anyway. What page you ask that link to go to is up to you.

    • Ask for it in your link exchange details.
    • Start a blog.
    • Join Link Vault
    • Do a press release.
    • Write articles that include permission to re-publish.
    • Get some presell pages.
    • Include 'Link to this Page' details on the desired pages.
    • Look again at DMOZ, if you have great unique content and a decent enough category editor it's possible to score some great deep links.
    • PM bobmutch, he'll know what directories accept internal pages.
    • Pay for them - buy text links.
    • Start a sub-domain and link back to internal pages on your main site.
    • Start a forum on a sub-domain - as above.
    • ummmm.... that's all I can think of for now.

I was about to ask the same question. Google is coming up with http://home.snafu.de/tilman/xenulink.html but it says it finds broken links and nothing about creating sitemaps.
