I was just curious as to what you guys thought about backlinks that are "no follow". A LOT of people say that you still get SOME credit for "no follow" backlinks, while others say not to bother at all with them. Also, some say that if the site is big and important enough, that you WILL get some credit. Is there any truth to that? Also, if you get a "no follow" backlink, is it basically the same as getting a backlink from a "do follow" pagerank 0 site? I ask this becuase I remember reading that when a backlink is "no follow", that it "loses its weight" (which I'm assuming meant PR).
backlinks with nofollow have no value associated with them when you see them in the perspective of Google. on the other hand Yahoo! and MSN do count them. therefore, you should get the backlinks from nofollow also
What shailendra said is right. The most Google will do with a nofollow is index the site, it will not pass it any authority nor Page Rank. Yahoo and MSN on the other hand may pass authority.
Yahoo and Msn have such small market shares it's not worth it. In Google's eyes they are absolutly worthless. On a nice heavy traffic blog you may be able to pick some of it's traffic but for link value it's worthless. Pr 0 link on a dofollow is weak but has a value. No follow link on a PR10 has no value.
Thank you very much for this information; I really appreciate it. This is the best response I have got so far about the whole do not follow thing.
It is always good to get no-follow links also for Google. Because if it sees only follow links to your site you will become suspicious and un-natural
Here's what I do to own top placements in Google for my keywords. Just type your keyword into Google (without quotes since most people don't search for a keyphrase in quotes.) Look at all the pages that come up on the first two pages of Google. Go to these sites and wherever possible attempt to place a backlink on each site. Don't worry if it's no follow or not. If it's a popular blog and it's owning the front page of Google for your keyword, you want to take advantage of that site getting good traffic and direct some of it at YOUR site. So let's say you're targeting "affiliate marketing for newbies" or something and a dozen Internet marketing blogs come up. Some of these blogs might be do follow, some no follow. But if you look at the blogs and they have a fair amount of comments, people are visiting these sites - and you want to get some of them to visit your site. So post helpful or interesting comments everywhere you can on all the sites that are on the first few pages of Google. After your comments are posted you'll start seeing traffic from people who come across the blogs and read your comments and find the backlink to your site. Traffic will be very targeted if you're using a keyword that relates well to your site and your product. Driving traffic isn't just about impressing Google. It's about observing how REAL people seek and find information on the net and being smart about how you intercept some of that traffic, driving it to your own sites. Dan
"no follow" links will do 2 things: 1) they drive traffic to your site when they are in a relevant place. If you are useful, people will visit your site and SOME of them will place one-way links to your site, many of which are "Do Follow." 2) they are counted by Yahoo at YSE in the total link count. The minor engines like yahoo do not have sophisticated algorithms like Google, so they just count them equally, without caring about "no follow" tags or PR of the linking site.
If you write excellent comments on blogs with no-follow enabled, people are going to be interested in what else you have to say and visit your site. If you are looking for site that have no-follow disabled, here is a good one to start with: http://www.google.com/coop/cse?cx=013390256337737331053:jq3m6dxkyts
Nofollow links count as a backlink. You just don't get any PR power from them. I comment and post on nofollow blogs and sites all the time but they are mainly sites that have a ton of traffic. Depending on the site, comments and timing I can get anywhere from 40 to 200 or so hits to my sites with just one comment. My purpose is not traffic but that has been my experience.
all links count to some extent. yahoo and msn still follow links with nofollow atribute so its well worth it. but dofolow links give you better benefit with google
Okay everyone look. "Preventing comment spam 1/18/2005 04:28:00 PM If you're a blogger (or a blog reader), you're painfully familiar with people who try to raise their own websites' search engine rankings by submitting linked blog comments like "Visit my discount pharmaceuticals site." This is called comment spam, we don't like it either, and we've been testing a new tag that blocks it. From now on, when Google sees the attribute (rel="nofollow") on hyperlinks, those links won't get any credit when we rank websites in our search results. Lucomm - you're welcome! For me, everything I do online either is designed to 1) please Google and allow my site to organically advance in the engines for my keywords and/or 2) drive traffic in a more natural, people-focused way (through commenting on high traffic or targeted traffic no follow sites and blogs. Also things like offline advertising come into play here.) You do need to do both things, you just have to learn how to juggle both strategies. Dan
They have a definate value for two reasons. 1. Some people do not use G believe it or not, though yahoo seems to have back engineered this now based on 50 sites. 2. Link profile. For every link you get do follow you will get three no follow. If the G bot thinks otherwise your do follow will be devalued. Thus every blog commenter please buy something expensive as you have had a payrise
I don't care about "credit" I care about traffic. If you are posting comments only to get "credit" you are doing it wrong.
