Getting an Email list?

I have never done email marketing before but am interested in starting for one of my sites. Where can I get a large USA mailing list? What company's/ sites have you all found to have the best quality service? and another question, when I buy a list am I getting the list that I can reuse or does the company normally just send out my message?

best is to tie up with a large website or advertise in large website. just sending emails from mailing lists wont help, people might take it as spam and ignore it.

It depends on who your market is. I don't think they are still around, but in the past I purchased email lists through dr-411.com. Like somebody said earlier, you have to be careful because you may be reported as spam and depending on your host, they could freeze your account. Also, as a general rule of thumb, plan on the following:

65% of the email addresses don't work
20% of the email addresses are to people you aren't trying to advertise to
3% of the email recipiants will delete your message before they read it
1% of the email recipiants will read your message then delete it
1% of the email recipiants will actually go to your website...

What you do with that 1% after they arrive at your site is all in your hands...

well if you send 10000 e-mails out... 6500 dont work.... so you've got 3500, - the others and your down to about 1000, so 1000 isnt bad, but getting 10000 e-mail addresses could be a challenge

What market are you trying to reach? Anyone in particular? Doctors, lawyers and realtors are very easy to get email databases for.

I managed to get my hands on a list of 20,000 addresses, but they are not all in the U.S. sitefever is right, though - many of them can be stale. Email marketing is a numbers game.

As for better targeting, try http://www.salesgenie.com.

    ...and good luck! :)

this is my advice NEVER....EVER USE EMAIL MARKETING UNLESS THE EMAILS ARE YOURS IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!! (meaning you have collected them not someone else) or you could get in a deep deep hole...

Thats not a big thing I guess to find 10000 email addresses.
I came across an so called "online job" form yesterday in my city. They are providing 3 million email addresses and say their employees to spam. Preety funny. I am planning to join them just to get that 3 million email addresses.

Unless you are willing to spend good money on purchasing a quality list from a major marketing company do not bother.

You can easily harvest emails by posting on myspace and luring users to signing up for your service (maybe a nice one too like a proxy, layouts, etc...) and having them agree that you can use their emails. The list would end up being directed at a specific niche but of course it wouldn't be enough for serious email marketing. Just an idea...

Email marketing is very inefficient, and is generally regarded as spam. That "3% delete your message before reading" is way too low, it's much higher.

Buying email addresses is so dodgy because you never know where they got them, or how they got them. Chances are you're getting a load of people who signed up for something totally unrelated to your business.

I'd consider that to be a poor quality list, but such lists are obviously all over the place. A good email campaign is all about targeting, and freshness. Any emails that haven't been verified within 18 months are fairly likely to be out of date, and even if they're current the person may not be interested in your product any more.

I've known people who have emailed 3 million recipients with astonishingly poor results. There is simply no point in emailing that many addresses, it gets you tagged as spam and it's often useless. Try collecting your own list (and make sure you remove bounces regularly), or find a quality list that's been recommended by people you trust.

thanks for the information everyone. I think im going to try and start my own list after hearing from alot of people this is really spam, I dont want to bug people.

Do you all have suggestions for what programs to use for collecting email addresses when i send people to my site? and how would I send emails to all those people at once?

Email marketing is mostly considered as spamming unless u r sending mails to opt in subscribers.
