Getting a handle on ad revenue ballpark

Im trying to get a handle on what kind of advertising price point I should be looking at for my Web site. In the past I have been in partnership with Cox Publishing (newspaper magnate) for streaming my ads, however they contract is expiring soon. Its a fixed fee contract that pays me X dollars a month. In exchange the newspaper leveraged my traffic in their Omniture Site Catalyst ratings to increase their market share. Kind of like the Arbitrons of the Internet.

I now need to replace these ads soon, but Ive never flighted ads from generic cookie house advertising companies. I want to get a handle on what kind of revenue I should be targeting for my Web site based on my traffic -- either through a CPC ad system or through knocking on doors of local businesses.

My site is a college sports fan site and we do 225,000 page views a month at the low end and close to 800,000 page views during peak season (baskteball season). We've been around 13 years and are among the nicer fan sites in the net and have no real competition with competing sites for the same fan base.

Perhaps the best question to ask is, what revenue point should I be attempting to target per month -- whether its a CPC stream or selling ads to local companies? $1000/mth? $2500/mth? I have prime above the fold ad spots, in-line spots in forum threads, below the fold space, and space to get creative to issue forum sponsorships, etc.

Im just looking for a context to get started. Thanks.
