Hi, Folks... I've been trying to figure out this SEO thing for a local website I've created. I made mention of it in another thread, but I didn't want to hijack that one, so I figured I'd start a new thread with my question. My site is for a local community in Upstate NY. I'm trying to get a top ranking for "Amsterdam New York" and "Amsterdam NY". I've learned that rankings are helped by having your site linked regularly. My question is, would it be a good move to have someone post for me in the various feeds and boards, as I've seen people advertise? I know there would be very little interest in my site, as again, it's all a local thing, but would just having those links out there help me get a good ranking? Also, this isn't unethical or frowned upon in any way, is it? Thanks very much in advance for any advice. Cheers, -Rusty-
Postings will help although "no follow" links won't do a lot for you. There is evidence out that that a few "no follow" links can help. What you should do is put some good content out there on article sites with "followed" links to your site. Your overall serp ranking will improve overtime as well as your local. Make sure to claim your listings on a few local sites such as google places, yelp, and yahoo. Good luck
You will need number of link building methods if the keyword you are targeting has a huge Competition. Try Social Bookmarking for your website and also some other seo methods you will not see a sudden change of your ranking it takes time.
What services or products does your local site offer? Targeting a phrase that only indicates the area/location of the business like "Amsterdam New York" really will not do to well. The best approach for local optimization is: First, establish the website in both Google Places and Bing Local Second, Do keyword research to discover the most optimal keywords. They should include and indicator for what is offered and the location (service + location). Third, begin establishing "citations." These are your business name, address, phone number across the web. Often these will go hand in hand with business and state directory listings. Lastly, continue link building and never stop. Your links should consist of anchor text with the exact phrases you're looking to rank for (service + location), your business name, your URL and variations of the phrase being targeted. Hope that helps.
