Adwords is an option for while you wait to rank in the natural listings in Google.

If you have an arsenal of high PR pages with lots of traffic it is easy to set up a new website and start getting traffic to it. Starting from scratch it is harder.

Search engines are generally the best route IMHO. Other forms of promotion tend to be costly (PPC) or hit and miss.

Nope it aint but if your site is set up right, it will bring good traffic and could get you some sales if you have an e-commerce site.

I paid a few sites $5 to $20 just because I really cannot imagine 10,000 to 1,000,000 impression and popup wont have any effect. To my disappointment (or whatever teh feeling was), nothing! My web log does shown a very close number of page hit, but no, no click was registered at all.

I think you are making a mistake there - ringtone click can be expensive, unless naything below $1 is consider cheap to you. Check overture and you will see. Probably the first ad being click is not ringtone or some other reason.

Ok, so I've been reading this a while and thinking about my debt site (http://www.debt-reduction-solution.com/). It's original content that I'm slowly building with REAL PRACTICAL APPLICATION articles on the site. I've done three article submissions of unique articles. Posted on debt related sites, blogged, mentioned on other small sites I have, etc but my traffic is under 10 uniques a day. I have managed a good click-through rate.

If you had this site and could do ONLY ONE THING to it to get organic traffic (no adword campaigns), what would you do?

No matter how good a site is, it will very difficult to get referrals from search engines. It takes a bit of time to rank becuse most topics are already covered one way or another by many others. However, if you do the right things then you can leapfrog them in the SERPS but in time not straight away. I am sure the people who are getting 1000 uniques a day are interlinking their sites and promoting it within their older sites or spending havily on ads.

Can you be more specific with the marketing techniques that you use? Do you use traditional forms of advertising or what? Sounds like we might all be able to learn something from you.

I've been playing the online game for a long time. I've tried almost every fad and I've also been there for the beginning and end of several 'fad' markets. There is one sure fire way to get a huge surge of hits, and then a steady supply of regular visitors. Create a posting or an article or a page that contains something of interest to everyone. Perhaps a funny video that hasn't been seen 10,000 times before, or some funny photos. Maybe a story. Maybe a joke. Anything. Now you send this out via email to everyone you know. If its good enough.. it's going to start being forwarded like mad. Everyone will be visiting your site. (this the big surge in traffic)

Now you have to make them come back after that email is long been deleted. So you need to make sure you are updating the content daily. Make it interesting.

A prime example of this is the blog "thesuperficial.com" .. It's about celebrities and there is new posts daily. Someone sent me a link to a Britney Spears video or something from there last year and now it's become a site I visit at LEAST once a month. I like his writing style. I like how original his content is... and I like how he makes me laugh.

It's all about giving the visitors something that nobody has given them yet... and continuing to do so.. every single day.

To me, the only way to get a lot of visitors is to rank high for well searched terms on Google. Full stop. If yor site is good then some will book mark well others will remember the site and come back in the future. Of course, you will get a stream of traffic in the meantime for ranking well. All other methods such as email marketing and other similar methods only results in temporary spike in traffic.

If you want traffic fast, having a media-friendly site is one way to do it. By media friendly, I mean a site that is unique or offers really good information that newspapers or sites like digg.com, cool sites of the day, etc would notice. Using PR and word of mouth to grow it fast.

I started 2 sites, one in 1998 and one in 2002 which have both gotten more than 1,000 uniques per day within the first month. I didn't even know about SEO back then, the traffic came from media and word of mouth.

The site I started in 2002 was actually getting closer to 10,000 uniques per day within the first month. So it can definitely be done, just create something that you would personally find very interesting and start promoting.

It only takes to rank on the first page for one quite highly searched term on Google and you will easily get hundreds of referrals a day. All other ways seems to me to be all temporary traffic.

I agree..... what lots of folks who post their "success stories" in having or gaining traffic neglict to mention to newbies like myself is they have established sites they link to (or a fellow webmaster's/friend's site (s) ) and they look like they are doing something spectuacular in the marketing of their sites.

If you want to be just as amazed as I am... have a look at this. I know I've posted it before, but this is a "must see":

    www.statcounter.com
    user: qcf_visitor
    pass: visitor

The site was dying out with less than 200 daily yesterday... What's the magical solution?!.. Well.. The guys at collegehumor.com liked it/its content and you can see with your own eyes the results of having a link on their homepage... It's a jawdropper... I'm still in shock :)
