damn, I only get like 20 uniques a day (or less), and I do have good on-page SEO, many directory listings (most of them are still waiting approval), forum posting with signature and even #1 on MSN with some of the keywords (G just indexed), and my site is about 3 weeks old... what am I doing wrong?? (to check out the site, it's in the sig)

Did you do any advertising at all? It does help a lot to kick your website to a good start. I've done it until yesterday with adwords (some idiot started to click 1000 times on my ad so I stopped) and that helped a bit. People need to know about you first of all. Then, they'll tell other people and so on. I now rank 2nd on MSN for "cool facts" and "interesting facts" which are top keywords for one of my finished sites. I would say that comes from the interest in what's on those webpages, not from SEO, 'cause I didn't do too much of it.

PS TARGETED ADVERTISING, don't just advertise anywhere, only people who are interested in what you have to offer should see your ads.

well, I didn't do any advertising, nor do I want to.. as far as I understand many people get a big number of uniques without paying anything.. also, I rank 1st on "wireless computer networks", "hiperman" and some other keywords on MSN.. but that doesn't bring me too many people

Neither does to me as well, msn sucks, no one's using it :D. Anyhow, you might get good profit in visitors with little cash spent ;) Seriously, try it, visitors won't just fall from the sky!

MSN is underrated....we are continually getting 50 searches a day on msn on a brand new site.

It also helps to have good ranking sites so that you can link to your new site. Many webmasters who have this use it to get new sites going. They link to their new site and traffic might roll in.

You can try to have your new site "digged" or promoted in a similar way. That is free traffic to your site right there. But if your site does not convert the traffic will evaporate fast.

I was able to get over 1,000 per day within the first few days of opening my new site. But then again, I'm Moto. :)

    1. Write an interesting article, create an interesting video, or create a useful tool - offer it for free.
    2. Get it listed on Digg, Slashdot, and the other aggregators.
    3. You'll probably get 1,000 uniques in a day.

The challenge is, how to keep them coming back?

I also rely almost completely on MSN and to a lesser extent Yahoo for new sites.

MSN almost always is the SE to first start sending traffic my way.
Yahoo comes next and google dawdles a couple of months later.

No one can give you an honest answer to that question without knowing the niche. Additionally, how much knowledge you already have about that niche is even more important.

Assuming you know nothing about building internet traffic, your going to be working hard. For someone experienced, 1000 a day within a month is a pretty reasonable goal for just about any topic.

I think you have to be more realistic and take smaller steps. Concentrate on getting 100 uniques to the site each and everyday, then work from there.

If I had 25 grand I could put an ad on yahoo's homepage for a day. I am sure I would get over 1000 visitors that day, but I don't have the 25 grand.

That sucks for me. I shelled out $13k in SEO for a new site going for big time terms. After 3 months we are getting about 190 uniques a day.

Obviously, SEO is only part of the equation, especially early on.

Well I started a new site less than a month ago and I'm getting 1500 uniques a day without ever having spent anything on advertising, so I think my plan was a a success and the results are very real.

However, I started my first site more than a year ago, and despite it being featured on Dr. Phil, Good Morning America, the front page of the LA Times, the Washington Post, and CNN.com, the site gets 1000 uniques a day.

This is probably because my oldest website is a niche site for people who have something called Asperger's Syndrome.

There are tons more page-views on my older site and I'm getting a lot of revenue from CPM (I LOVE Tribal Fusion - no other CPM ad company can compare to them in any way), but my new site has appeals to billions of people in this country.

I'm 19, I have Asperger's Syndrome, and I wouldn't be where I am today if I ever listened to people who told me to set realistic goals; I wouldn't have been in the national news--I wouldn't be writing a book. I definitely wouldn't be flying out to LAX next week and staying in Beverly Hills to meet with a screenplay writer if I had listened to people whose aspirations are little beyond those of a cashier at KMart (although many KMart cashiers do have aspirations and some realize them and I greatly respect them-- but I'm using this just to illustrate a point). I'm not referring to anyone here as I've found you all to be extremely successful and very welcoming to those who are also ambitious but haven't yet found their niche.

I think 100 uniques a day would have been a realistic goal, and expecting to be getting anything above that would have been naive, but I'm unrealistic, and I think most people who are successes are very unrealistic, or just lucky. I'm not going to leave my fate up to chance.

    Alexplank,

Good on you for following what you wanted to do. Not many people can push through the discouragement of what other people have to say but you have.

    It is a great achievement.

    Thanks Brad!

What's even more exciting about this site is the number of uniques keeps increasing by 100-300 each day. Two days ago there were 1,441 unique visitors. Yesterday there were 1,710 uniques!

Yet my YPN ads are starting to perform more poorly. I'm blocking some ringtone ads, however, which I think may be only 10 cents since they display so frequently and I got only 10 cents from the first click of the day.
