Better initiate sending friend requests. Don't wait for them to add you. Once you'll get friends, add their friends also.
tag your friends with your unique/interesting photo/note... This photo/note will appear on your friend's wall.. So your friend's friend will give some attentions to you.
If you want more requests, you can also "like" Facebook Fan Pages that involve subjects that you are interested in. After you like a few pages, comment on them and read other peoples comments.
