Backlinks are one of the major factors... maybe you should browse around the DP forums and follow some advice.

i think that good quality backlinks can only help for competitive keywords, content is for non competitive keywords to rank better.

You can also use ezinearticles to get to #1 in google - just like the affiliate did for the search term 'feminization hypnosis'!

    Hope this helps

I would say it is a mixture of the following

    - Fresh content that is updated on a regular basis
    - Basic on-page seo.
    - Backlinks from sites that share the same theme as your page, if you can get your keyword in the anchor text this is a +
    - Patience (google tends to give older sites an edge over newer ones)

When you say 'age' - do you mean age of the site or the page?

Yes the age is important. I remember one of my sites were ranked like on page 50 or so on google for a certain keyword. I kind of gave up and didn't do anything to the site. Then About three months later i was ranked on the first page on position number 5. And this was for a pretty popular keyword.

continue building backlinks and do some social bookmarking.
    submitting to ezinearticles will help.

Well I don't actually believe about age factor ;) Google is smart enough not to include domain age for a ranking factor. There are many old sites ranked nowhere.

Just because the domain is old, they don't automatically think your site is trustworthy. It's one of SEO myths, just like .edu links.

Just focus on unique content and backlinks. Mostly backlinks are more direct to influence on the SERP.
