If you owned the domain Dating.com you would automatically get the 1st or second page even without backlinks. You might even rank ahead of guys that have been working hard on their backlinks for years.

I also agree that you do need backlinks. But you don't need nearly as many to keep your position as you would if you a completely irrelevant but brandable domain name.

Yeah that is the point I was making. You do not pop up on the #1 for the keyword by doing nothing but if someone had dating.com and someone has xyz.com and dating.com had 100 backlinks and xyz.com had 1000 than I think dating.com would still be on the top.

Then you're always going to have an average joe website. They weren't always authority sites, you start your site and build it up.

dude im more than qualified to say that ;) keyword domains will give you a slight boost in the early stages in weak searches, but once you get involved in a competitive search, just ten good sites on the first page means you"re on the 2nd page for quite some time, whatever your domain name.

once a search gets really competitive, the advantage isn't the domain name, its that your IBLs by default contain your keywords because theyre in the domain name.

Having keywords in our domain name is definitely a plus, but is of no use if your site poorly optimized. You'll just be easy pickings for those who want to overtake you.

I'm sure your domain name helped... but you really can't conclusively prove anything unless you had an identical site without keywords in the url that ranked much lower.

If I sneeze and then it starts raining that doesn't necessarily mean that my sneeze caused the rain.

I do believe it helps. I'm just trying to say you can never be sure unless you set up your study scientifically and isolate variables, etc.

I'm with SEOibiza. Most people on here are saying that keywords in domain help because they are bidding on 3 word phrases and keywords that aren't competitive. Therefore the perception is that having keywords in the domain name helped.

Yes it helps, but it's not super heavy weighting. Along a similar line, anyone wanna buy rovercarparts.com from me? 800,000 worldwide searches a month for "rover car parts" according to google adwords, bit more than "seo services london" hehe. I record 1,000 for that.

I just would prefer to cash in on it if poss otherwise next project i suppose.

This is right because of directories etc with juice and trust rank such as DMOZ. It means you are guaranteed your anchor if you name the site after your domain. Cheap airline tickets for example

Yeh the other benefit being the anchor text on inbound links, which are naturally the keywords you're targeting.

That means that that keyword phrase has NO competition.

464,000 results found on that keyphrase and the top 10 isn't even relevant. So this is so easy for everybody to rank well for. And does it send traffic?? I think a little bit or not!

For lower competition keyword phrases, it is a great way to score that one keyword.

When I first registered my domain name, i was also listed on the first page of Google. The rankings did drop after the first month and after that it went back up because of other SEO techniques. It never hurts though!
